Introduction
Education is an ever-changing field, with new teaching methods designed to help meet the needs of all students in the classroom. Changes are needed in the curriculum to help present all topics relevant to the growth of students in school and to better prepare them for the global and diverse world they will be heading into. The major focus of this study will be special education and technology. This research will investigate how techniques and technology can help with inclusion of special education. Special education students from multiple grade levels will be participants in the research to investigate the impact of assistive technology on student learning. The study will include special education students from inner city and suburban schools to ensure a diverse study group.
The Problem
Within the field of special education, the goal is for more inclusion not exclusion of special education students within the regular education classroom. Within this inclusive environment, it is required that educators follow special education students’ IEPs (Individualized Education Plan) and all accommodations and modifications. Can assistive technology help bridge the gap and allow teachers to successfully teach a diverse population of students, addressing their learning styles and special needs?
