As a school community many teachers including me were struggling with the issue of students who remained muted, and their camera remained off. Due to our students’ unique needs, the school policy did not require the students to have their cameras on during class. Many staff noted that students would login into Zoom but not respond and the staff had no idea if the students were still in front of the computer. I had an idea of creating an incentive program that rewarded students who not only actively participated in class but were also on camera for the entire class. Below is a draft I submitted for the incentive program / requirements and tier system. I worked with the special education teachers to include progress monitoring classes as well as counseling sessions for certain students. This way the plan was modified to meet the IEP requirements student.
Incentive System for Attendance and Engagement
Classes per week
*Note: A school week is considered four days of in-session classes. In case of a holiday, the fourth day will be adjusted to the next day classes are in session.
Students without an IEP: 24 total classes
Students with an IEP: 25 total classes
Students with an IEP and Counseling: 26 total classes
Qualifications for rewards
Students must attend a class on time.
Students must have their camera on with their face visible for the duration of the class.
Students must remain in class until dismissed by their teacher.
Tiered system
A. Using 24 classes as the baseline:
24/24 = 100%
20/24 = 83.3%
16/24 = 66.7%
B. Proposed tiers:
Tier 1: 24 out of 24 classes with camera on
Reward: $15 Visa Gift Card
Tier 2: 20 through 23 out of 24 classes with camera on
(After the first 3 weeks of implementing the incentive program, this tier will move to 22 through 23 out of 24 classes – 91.7% to 95.8%%.)
Reward: $10 Visa Gift Card
Tier 3: 16 through 19 out of 24 classes with camera on
(After the first 3 weeks of implementing the incentive program, this tier will move to 18 through 21 out of 24 classes – 75% to 87.5%)
Reward: $5 Gift Card to McDonald’s or Dunkin Donuts
C. Tracking
Present on Camera will be tracked on Gradelink under Class Attendance.
