In the course LLT 545 Problem Based Learning I was able to build upon my knowledge of PBL since I was already incorporating this in my teaching, but this allowed be to add more educational tools to my tool belt . I have added some course work which provides my idea of why PBL is not only a success in today educational setting but a necessity for all teachers.

What is PBL?

“Project Based Learning (PBL) prepares students for academic, personal, and career success, and readies young people to rise to the challenges of their lives and the world they will inherit.”

Problem Based Learning or PBL is a learning style that is stated in its name in which students are the ones problem solving, instead of being presented with material to solve the problem. The Problem itself is presented to the students and usually would work best working in groups. As stated, before education and the material being taught should have some real-world connection to the students or they will become disconnected from the education since it doesn’t connect to or affect their current lives.

I believe that PBL is a turning point for our educational system, but it can’t be the only way we teach our students. I believe and support PBL and the Constructivism theory and understand its importance in helping us evolve our education system. I feel as though some subjects will have a easier time implementing and using PBL and Constructivism in class. For example, a Math class like Personal Finance would be a great subject to be able to implement a PBL Learning style on a more regular basis. In my subject matter of History, I find it very important to try and incorporate PBL Learning and Constructivism which will help me keep my students engaged in a subject matter which can at times be dull or unimportant to their everyday lives. When teaching I do incorporate projects and student driven discussions. I feel that there will be times when I must give a short lecture to explain historical events in detail during which students are in a more traditional educational setting.
