I am working closely with Agile which is a company that oversees our network setup, phones, and internet. I have been in contact as the Technology Director to resolve our slow internet and lagging network issues. I am building a Professional Learning Network with Agile to keep our network running smoothly. During my course work in LLT 540 Management of Information and Technology Center, I gained a better understanding of the steps needed to create a supportive yet efficient technology department in a school. A school will not be able to take advantage of the newest technology without the proper leadership, training, and maintenance. I learned the importance of connecting to outside resources to be knowledgeable of the everchanging world of educational technology. As I began exploring the different organizations available to join, the ISTE (International Society for Technology in Education) caught my attention. The ISTE is an organization which allows myself and other educators to come together to explore new technologies to help solve issues we as educators may face in the classroom.
I believe technology and education go hand in hand. The world of the twenty-first century runs on technology which is incorporated in our daily lives. Many teachers unfortunately are reluctant to use and see the value of technology in the classroom. This usually is an issue with older more tenured teachers. One reason why this occurs is that there is not enough professional development which would help teachers both young and old incorporate new technology in the classroom.
As head of the technology department, I am usually the one looked upon for guidance when it comes to technology questions in my school. I believe that I need to be better prepared to aid the staff with any questions or concerns they have. The ISTE Organization provides great resources for both students and staff. They also have a great set of resources for educational leaders to help set up professional training opportunities for the staff to better prepare them to implement new technologies and techniques for use in the classroom.
ISTE is very well organized on Social Media. By exploring Facebook, teachers can find many groups and organizations based on their needs. I did join the ISTE Facebook Group to get new updates. Listed below are other helpful organizations and events.
ISTE Librarians Network,
Description
“ISTE Librarians Network's purpose is to promote librarians as leaders and champions of educational technology and digital literacy. The key mission is to provide a professional learning community where librarians can leverage technology knowledge and expertise to improve school library programs, increase access to information, and foster strong teaching and learning environments in a connected world.”
Scheduled for July 14th is an ISTE Certification Training for Educators (fully online) that could be very useful ISTE. This is a professional development workshop for K-12 classroom teachers, librarian/media specialists, technology educators, tech integrationists, instructional coaches, and administrators.
“Technology integration shouldn’t be about the tool - it should be about the learning. During the ISTE Certification process, educators will deeply engage with the ISTE Standards for Educators and pedagogy that transforms learning. We will move beyond tools into an exploration of using technology to empower and inspire students.”
