Tic-tac-toe, also known as "Think-tac-toe,” is a differentiation tool that offers a collection of activities from which students can choose to demonstrate their understanding.
  • presented in the form of a nine square grid similar to a tic-tac-toe board
  • students are expected to complete from one to “three in a row”.
The activities will vary in subject matter and grade level. This is a great tool which can be used to help accommodate and modify assignments for students with special needs. Usually, the center square may be left open for the student to select an activity of their own. Tic-tac-toe activities may be given to every student in the class with higher ability students having extension activities and lower ability students using it for review and practice.

Below is a blank template of a Think-tac-toe board. I have also attached one that I have used in my class.
The assignments on the Think-tac-toe board help evaluate students’ knowledge using a more hands-on approach. While formal tests are still used in my classroom from time to time, project based activities provide another useful means of student assessment.
